Kitchen Stools
When choosing kitchen stools, you'll want to think through all the possible uses before you buy a set. If you spend a lot of time in your kitchen, then you already know how much you move around while cooking. Wouldn't a stool you can move around from place to place be helpful? Think of it as your cook's stool.
Then, there are the more common uses for kitchen stools, such as eating at a counter or the kitchen table. The key in this case is to find stools that are the correct height, particularly if the counters and table are of different heights. Measure from the floor to the bottom of the counter and table. Be sure to get stools that will allow 8-12 inches between the top of your thighs and the bottom of the shorter of the two (counter or table). If the heights are widely divergent (more than 6 inches), you may want to get two different stool sets, as finding a good compromise may be impossible.
If you have kids, you can count on them dragging a kitchen stool off into the TV room or their favorite spot to do homework. So, that's yet another use you should take into consideration when shopping for stools.
Most kitchen stools get a lot of use, especially if the family eats there. It's a good idea to get stools that are made of materials that can withstand the inevitable abuse. Wrought iron, stainless steel, and chrome are all good choices. You may want to avoid soft wood frames, arms, and seatbacks. They'll likely get scratched up pretty early on. Pay particular attention to the seating material. Choose fabric that can handle regular use. Avoid thin leather or vinyl.
It's generally a bad idea to pick kitchen stools purely for their looks. Yes, you want to complement the décor in that room, but for most people, the practical considerations should outweigh the artistic aspects.
