Counter Stools
Counter stools tend to come in two starkly different styles: very basic, functional stools or intricate, artistic designs. Both serve the function of providing necessary seating at kitchen or dining counters. Which style you choose comes down to personal preference and fitting in with the other furniture in your home or commercial establishment.
Basic counter stools are often made of unfinished or varnished hardwood, have round or square stationary seats, and no seatbacks. They are most often on a base of four legs held in place by two rows of supporting crossbeams. This simple design has been in use for centuries and works very well in homes, bars, and restaurants that want a rustic, traditional look.
For those seeking counter stools that are more elegant and artistically designed, there are plenty of options here as well. These types of stools tend to have seatbacks and favor metal over wood. Wrought iron and brushed aluminum are among the most popular materials for the legs and seatbacks, coupled with cloth or leather seats set on swivels.
One thing all counter stools have in common is a narrow range of heights (20-24 inches). They run a bit shorter than bar stools, primarily because kitchen and commercial lunch counters are shorter (30 inches). This shorter stool stature makes them ideal for multiple uses. Your kids can use them in the game room, watching TV, or doing homework at the counter. They can even double as kitchen table chairs when company is visiting.
Just as with other types of stools, counter stools come in a wide variety of designs. You'll have no trouble finding a set that complements your other home or commercial furniture.
If you expect heavy use, one tip is to concentrate on stools that have durable seat materials. Heavy fabric or thick vinyl are good choices. Moreover, you may want to get counter stools that have thick cushions for maximum comfort. It's also a good idea to look for counter stools with legs made of a durable material, like stainless steel or varnished hardwood. You want long-lasting, tough stools that will stand up to abuse over many years.
