The Pros and Cons of Backless Bar Stools
When picking out bar stools, one of the fundamental decisions is whether to get stools that are backless or that have backs. Some people choose backless bar stools purely based on esthetic reasons, which is fine if the stools won't be used very often and are primarily for decoration. However, if the seating will be used regularly, it's a good idea to weigh the pros and cons of this style of stool.
On the plus side, backless bar stools are lighter than those with seatbacks. This may not be a major concern if you just have a pair in your home, but for those with restaurants or bars, it can be a big deal. The lighter weight is easier to move for young, old, and injured patrons, as well as your employees.
Another advantage of choosing backless bar stools is that they make moving around easier. This is important if you have visitors in your home or customers in your establishment who want to move around to talk to people all around them. They work especially well in bars for this reason. Add swivel seats and you've got the perfect seating for these occasions!
On the negative side, backless stools can cause back pain for people who sit in them for longer than a few minutes. It's easy to forget how much we depend on being able to lean back against something supportive from time to time when seated for any significant length of time. Even those who have no back issues will generally find it uncomfortable in a backless bar stool after more than an hour or so.
The other disadvantage of choosing backless seating is the comparatively plain look. A lot of bar stools are elegant and beautiful pieces of furniture, but they tend to be the ones with seatbacks. This is not to say you cannot find beautiful backless stools, but the choices are more limited.
Ultimately, there really is no clear advantage of choosing backless stools over those with seatbacks. It comes down to personal style preferences and the practical concerns associated with where the stools will be used and who will be using them.
